General Description:

The Gold Zebra Catfish, scientifically known as Brachyplatystoma juruense, is distinguishable by its broad dark vertical bands on a pale yellowish body, reaching lengths of up to 60.0cm. It shows a moderately-forked caudal fin with filaments in adults, and unique morphological features like an expanded mandibular suspensorium.

Aquarium Setup:

The Gold Zebra Catfish requires a tank size of at least 20000 litres with water temperatures ranging from 22-27°C and a pH level of 6.0-7.5. It thrives in water hardness between 18-215ppm. Adequate filtration and maintenance are vital, while decor options include sandy substrate, large driftwood pieces, or a bare setup.

Behaviour:

These catfish species should only be housed with larger tank mates to avoid predation due to their mostly piscivorous diet. They are relatively unfussy regarding water quality and lighting levels, but they do require a well-maintained environment for optimal health.

Feeding and Diet:

In their natural habitat, the Gold Zebra Catfish primarily feed on loricariids and other bottom-dwelling fish. In captivity, they readily adapt to eating prawns, shrimps, mussels, squid, and other dead alternatives. Adult specimens typically require feeding only once a week.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

This species has never been successfully bred in captivity. However, in the wild, related species like B. vaillantii and B. rousseauxii undertake seasonal upstream migrations connected to their reproductive behaviors. Sexual dimorphism in the Gold Zebra Catfish is currently unknown.

Habitat and Distribution:

The Gold Zebra Catfish is mostly found in larger, deeper river channels, including whitewater rapids, in areas like the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Its distribution spans various tributary drainages, with its initial description originating from the rio Juruá in northwestern Brazil.
