General Description

The Leiarius Pictus, commonly known as the Sailfin Pim, painted, saddle, or marbled sailfin catfish, is a species that grows up to 60.0cm in size. Native to the Rio Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela, as well as parts of the Amazon drainage in Peru and Brazil, these catfish inhabit large rivers and lakes, often lurking among submerged tree roots and other refuges during the day and emerging at night to feed.

Aquarium Setup

The Sailfin Pim requires a minimum tank size of 2592 liters with specific water conditions, including a pH of 6.2-7.6, hardness of 5-18°dH, and a temperature range of 22-26°C. Decor is not essential for adults, although large pieces of bogwood, beech branches, or smooth rocks can be added. Good filtration is crucial due to the waste produced by the fish, with a sump-type arrangement as the ideal choice. Juveniles appreciate hiding spots like bogwood, root tangles, rock piles, or plastic piping.

Behaviour

Although the Sailfin Pim is peaceful with similarly-sized fish given adequate space, it is territorial towards conspecifics and other large Pimelodids. It is a piscivorous species that can adapt to dead foods in captivity. However, it's crucial to offer a varied diet to prevent dietary issues and overfeeding, as excess protein can lead to health problems. Feeding every other day as juveniles and reducing frequency as they grow is recommended, with an adult requiring only one meal per week at most.

Feeding and Diet

Feeding the Sailfin Pim a diet of meaty items such as prawns, mussels, cockles, lancefish, or earthworms is suitable. Larger specimens can be given whole fish fillets, ensuring a varied diet is maintained. It's advised to avoid mammal meats like beef heart or chicken, as well as feeder fish, as they can cause health complications in the long term.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of the Sailfin Pim is unreported in the hobby, and distinguishing between male and female externally is challenging. Adult females may be stockier than males, but sexual dimorphism is virtually impossible to discern. The species' extensive lifespan of over 20 years highlights the need for responsible ownership and long-term commitment.

Habitat and Distribution

Inhabiting large rivers and lakes in regions like the Rio Orinoco basin and parts of the Amazon drainage, the Sailfin Pim prefers dimly lit environments with ample swimming space and hiding spots. The species' distribution spans Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and Brazil, where it thrives among underwater vegetation and tree roots.
