General DescriptionThe Red-Tail Catfish, scientifically known as Phractocephalus Hemioliopterus, is a large and striking freshwater fish species native to the Amazon and Rio Orinoco basins in South America. Known for its impressive size, adult specimens can reach up to 134.0cm in length.

Aquarium SetupFor housing a Red-Tail Catfish, a tank size of at least 10,000 liters is necessary. Tank decorations like bogwood, smooth rocks, or branches can be added, providing secure hiding spots for juveniles. A substrate of large, smooth pebbles is recommended to prevent swallowing or gill damage. A powerful biological filter, ideally a sump-type system, is crucial due to the significant waste production of this species.

BehaviourDespite its predatory nature towards smaller fish, the Red-Tail Catfish is generally peaceful and can coexist with similarly-sized species in spacious tanks. They are territorial towards other large fish of their kind and should typically be housed alone unless space permits otherwise.

Feeding and DietRed-Tail Catfish are opportunistic feeders in the wild, consuming fish, invertebrates, and fruits. In captivity, they thrive on a diet of meaty foods such as prawns, mussels, and earthworms. It is essential to offer a varied diet to prevent food habituation and avoid overfeeding, as obesity can lead to long-term health issues. Feeding frequencies should decrease as the fish matures.

Reproduction & DimorphismReproduction of the Red-Tail Catfish has not been documented in captivity, and sexual dimorphism remains unknown in this species.

Habitat and DistributionThese catfish are found in various habitats ranging from rapids to flooded forest areas within the Amazon and Rio Orinoco basins across countries like Colombia, Brazil, and Peru. Their distribution spans a large part of South America.
