General Description

The Pimelodus Ornatus, commonly known as the Ornate Pim, is a striking and sought-after species within the Pimelodidae family. With a maximum size of 28.0 cm, this scaleless catfish is sensitive to changes in water quality and prone to certain diseases due to its delicate skin. It belongs to a family with 32 genera, exhibiting diversity yet requiring further systematic revision for accurate classification.

Aquarium Setup

The Ornate Pim thrives in dimly lit tanks with ample swimming space and hiding spots for security. A fine sandy substrate is preferred, complemented by driftwood, branches, and smooth stones to mimic its natural riverine habitat. Robust filtration and consistent maintenance are crucial, while hardy plants like Anubias or Java fern can be added to enhance the environment (see table for specific water conditions).

Behaviour

Although generally peaceful, the Ornate Pim is a predator that may consume smaller tankmates. It is best suited for spacious tanks with active companions, as it can be bothersome towards slower-moving species. While solitary survival is possible, maintaining them in small groups enhances their activity and sociability, preventing daytime hiding tendencies.

Feeding and Diet

This species is opportunistic in feeding, readily accepting various food types. From live or frozen bloodworms to sinking pellets, the Ornate Pim's diet should be balanced to prevent overeating. It thrives on aquatic invertebrates in the wild but adapts well to aquarium diets, displaying a lively feeding response when food is introduced.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Ornate Pim in captivity remains unreported, as they are migratory and require specific environmental cues for spawning. Sexual dimorphism is unclear, but adult females likely possess a stockier build compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to northern South America, the Ornate Pim is prevalent in river systems across countries like Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina. Typically found in shallow, flowing waters with sandy or muddy substrates, this species adapts to main river channels, tributaries, and small lakes formed after seasonal floods.
