General Description
The Ornate Bichir, scientifically known as Polypterus ornatipinnis, belongs to the Polypteridae family and is considered the most visually appealing among the group. This freshwater fish, originating from Africa, falls under the category of Lobe-finned Pike. An intriguing feature of the Ornate Bichir is its ability to survive out of water for brief periods due to a lung-like paired swim bladder and gills that aid in breathing, though it ultimately requires a water environment for proper respiration.
Aquarium Setup
For the Ornate Bichir, an adequately sized "oddball" aquarium is recommended, filled with dense vegetation to create hiding spots and a sandy substrate. A crucial consideration is their semi-aggressive nature, as they have a tendency to prey on smaller fish and invertebrates that can fit into their mouths. While they are peaceful towards larger tank mates, they can exhibit aggression towards their own kind, necessitating a single Ornate Bichir in a tank unless it is exceptionally spacious. Due to their jumping behavior, a secure lid is vital for their tank.
Behaviour
The Ornate Bichir is categorized as semi-aggressive, showcasing a passive demeanor towards large tank mates but displaying aggression towards conspecifics. Their jumping inclination emphasizes the importance of a tightly sealed tank lid to prevent escapes.
Feeding and Diet
Being carnivorous, the diet of the Ornate Bichir consists of meat-based foods. They are opportunistic feeders and should be offered a varied diet that includes live and frozen meaty treats to ensure their nutritional requirements are met.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In its natural habitat, the Ornate Bichir reproduces by depositing eggs on clusters of vegetation. However, breeding occurrences in aquarium settings are infrequent, making successful breeding endeavors rare among hobbyists.
Habitat and Distribution
The Ornate Bichir is indigenous to Africa and typically inhabits freshwater environments. This species thrives in water conditions with a pH range of 6.5-7.5, a temperature range of 25.0-28.3°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) level between 1-12. Their preferred habitats include areas with dense aquatic vegetation that provide ample hiding spaces.
