General Description: The Polypterus Teugelsi, a member of the Polypteridae family, is a nocturnal and hardy species with poor vision, relying heavily on its sense of smell to find food. It displays a unique color pattern with a network of black marks on the body, an orange belly, and jet black pectoral fins. Unlike many other species in the genus, it has an elongated and slender body shape, making it distinct.
Aquarium Setup: For this species, a tank setup similar to other bichir species is recommended, prioritizing floor space over depth. Ideal conditions include a soft substrate, driftwood pieces, smooth rocks for hiding spots, and some floating vegetation. While not necessary, plants are appreciated, and a secure cover for the aquarium is essential as bichirs are known for their escape skills.
Behaviour: Polypterius Teugelsi can be peaceful but should not be housed with tankmates it can fit in its mouth. Suitable companions include other Polypterus species, Synodontis, Datnoides, Knife Fish, larger Ctenopoma species, medium to large characins, and African Butterfly Fish.
Feeding and Diet: Being carnivorous, P. Teugelsi prefers meaty live or frozen foods like prawns, earthworms, mussels, and lancefish, as dried foods are usually not accepted.
Reproduction & Dimorphism: Little is known about the breeding behavior and sexual dimorphism of this species. They have not been successfully bred in captivity, leading to a lack of knowledge concerning their reproductive habits.
Habitat and Distribution: This species is likely endemic to the River Cross drainage in Cameroon and is commonly found in shady, slow-moving rainforest streams with abundant overhanging marginal vegetation.
