General Description

Polypterus Weeksii, commonly known as the Mottled Bichir, belongs to the Polypteridae family. It is classified under the Polypteriformes category. This species is recognized for its upper-jawed tribe characteristics, where the upper jaw is equal to or longer than the lower jaw. With origins dating back to the ancient Triassic Period, over 200 million years ago, P. Weeksii is a nocturnal and hardy fish species that heavily relies on its sense of smell due to poor vision.

Aquarium Setup

When preparing an aquarium for P. Weeksii, it is crucial to prioritize floor space over depth. A soft substrate, combined with driftwood and smooth rocks arranged to create hiding spots, is ideal. Though not essential, plants can be added. It is important to have a secure cover for the aquarium, as P. Weeksii has a propensity for escaping.

Behaviour

The Mottled Bichir is relatively peaceful except when it comes to tankmates that it can fit in its mouth, which should be avoided. Compatible tankmates include other Polypterus species, Datnioides, Knife Fish, larger Synodontis and Ctenopoma species, medium to large characins, and African Butterfly Fish.

Feeding and Diet

As a carnivorous species, P. Weeksii typically does not accept dried foods, although some individuals may consume pelleted varieties. Optimal feeding options include meaty live or frozen foods such as prawns, earthworms, mussels, and lancefish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

While reproduction of P. Weeksii in captivity is not documented, it is assumed to follow similar patterns to other Polypterus species. Breeding likely occurs during the rainy season in natural habitats, triggered by changes in water temperature and chemistry. The male Mottled Bichir distinguishes itself with a thicker anal fin compared to the female.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is found in the River Congo basin within the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Polypterus Weeksii thrives in these regions with specific habitat requirements that mimic its natural environment.
