General Description
The Flagtail Characin, scientifically known as Semaprochilodus Taeniurus, is a herbivorous tetra originating from the central Amazon basin in Brazil. This species belongs to the Prochilodontidae family and can reach a maximum size of approximately 30.0cm. It is commonly referred to as the Silver Prochilodus or Fei Feng and plays a crucial ecological role in its natural habitat by feeding on organic detritus.
Aquarium Setup
For an ideal tank setup for Flagtail Characins, a minimum tank size of 540 liters is recommended. The water conditions should be maintained with a pH range of 5.5-7.5, water hardness between 1-20 degrees of dH, and a temperature of 23-29 degrees Celsius. Decor should include river sand substrate, driftwood branches, and twisted roots. Algal growth is beneficial as the fish will graze on it, but it is not suitable for a planted tank due to its herbivorous nature.
Behaviour
Flagtail Characins can exhibit aggressive behavior towards their own kind when housed in small numbers; however, they can coexist peacefully in groups of six or more in larger tanks. Alternatively, they thrive as solitary specimens in communities of medium to large fish. Suitable tankmates include large characins, Loricariids, Doradids, peaceful cichlids, knifefish, arowana, and freshwater stingrays.
Feeding and Diet
Although omnivorous, the Flagtail Characin primarily feeds on herbivorous diets. Their diet should consist mainly of vegetable matter such as blanched spinach, lettuce, cucumber, courgette, and algae wafers. Additionally, they accept high-quality dried foods and small frozen fare like bloodworms.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction behaviors of the Flagtail Characin are not well-documented in captivity due to their complex migratory spawning cycle observed in the wild. Mature females are reported to have a rounder belly compared to males, making sexual dimorphism difficult to identify.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, the Flagtail Characin migrates and spawns in river channels while predominantly feeding in floodplains, floodplain lakes (known as "várzeas"), and forest streams. This species is commonly found in the central Amazon basin in Brazil.
