General Description
Copadichromis Borleyi is a Malawian cichlid known for its peaceful nature and vibrant coloration. It belongs to the Cichlidae family, specifically the Pseudocrenilabrinae subfamily. This species, part of the Utaka group, is specialized for a pelagic lifestyle in Lake Malawi, where they use their protrusible upper jaw to feed on planktonic organisms.
Aquarium Setup
Copadichromis Borleyi requires a tank of at least 300 liters with ample swimming space and a sandy substrate. Rock piles can be added for hiding spots and potential spawning sites. Compatibility is crucial; avoid aggressive tankmates and prefer Aulonocara species or peaceful Haps as companions.
Behaviour
This species is peaceful but territorial, with males needing space to develop territories. They are shoaling by nature, so it's recommended to keep a single male with multiple females to distribute male attention. In larger tanks, multiple males can coexist with a larger group of females.
Feeding and Diet
Copadichromis Borleyi are zooplankton feeders but adapt well to various foods in captivity. Offer a mix of live, frozen, and dried foods, including Artemia nauplii and vegetable matter like blanched spinach.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Copadichromis Borleyi is a maternal mouthbrooder that spawns in a harem setup. Males display intense colors to attract females for mating. The female carries the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch into fry. Fry survival increases with a specialized breeding tank setup and expert care.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to Lake Malawi, Copadichromis Borleyi is commonly found near rocky areas and boulders in shallow waters. They form shoals in open water, often alongside other species. This species has been collected from various locations around Lake Malawi, indicating a wide distribution within the lake.
