General Description

The Smallscale Cyprichromis (Cyprichromis microlepidotus) is a sought-after cichlid species in the aquarium hobby. It is known for being a placid species that thrives in large groups, displaying stunning coloration, with males exhibiting more vibrancy than females. This species is quite rare in the hobby and is typically found in Lake Tanganyika, usually in the northern regions of the lake.

Aquarium Setup

For the Smallscale Cyprichromis, a tank size of at least 110 liters is recommended. As a pelagic species that swims in the upper part of the water column, it requires ample room to swim freely. The tank should have a deep structure with the upper half left open for swimming space, while any rockwork is best placed in the lower half to prevent jumping, as this species tends to jump when excited. Water conditions should ideally be maintained between a pH of 7.8-9.0, a temperature of 24-27°C, and a hardness of 10-25°dH (see table).

Behaviour

This cichlid species is peaceful and does not fare well with aggressive tankmates, especially Mbuna. It is best kept with other peaceful Tanganyikan species that occupy different areas within the tank, such as rock-dwelling species like Julidochromis or Altolamprologus. Cyprichromis thrive in larger groups, with a recommended minimum of 8-10 fish, although larger groups are preferred to enhance coloration and social dynamics.

Feeding and Diet

As an adapted zooplankton feeder with a small mouth, the Smallscale Cyprichromis is an unfussy eater in captivity. It feeds on small live and frozen foods like bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia, along with dried foods of suitable size. Multiple feeding sessions throughout the day mimic its natural grazing behavior.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding this species is possible in a community tank, but optimal results are achieved in a dedicated species setup. Males create 3-dimensional breeding territories in open water, where females are enticed to spawn. The female carries a small brood of 5-10 eggs in her mouth for about 4 weeks before releasing the fry. Males exhibit brighter colors compared to females, with both sexes showcasing polychromatism in different populations.

Habitat and Distribution

The Smallscale Cyprichromis is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and is typically found in the northern part of the lake, occasionally along the eastern shoreline. It inhabits open water areas in intermediate zones characterized by scattered rocks and sandy substrates.
