General Description

The Descamp's Strange-Tooth Cichlid, scientifically known as Ectodus Descampsii, is a rare species in the aquarium hobby. It has a distinguishable look, with smaller adult size and a black spot on the dorsal fin located towards the front. This species is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, specifically found between Moliro and Utinta Bay.

Aquarium Setup

To set up an aquarium for Descamp's Strange-Tooth Cichlid, a minimum tank size of 80 litres is recommended. The tank should have piles of rocks creating caves with open water spaces in between, a sandy substrate, and hard water-tolerant plants like Anubias or Vallisneria. Water parameters should be maintained at a temperature of 24-27°C, pH of 7.5-9.0, and hardness of 10-25°dH (see table).

Behaviour

Known for its shy nature, the Descamp's Strange-Tooth Cichlid should not be housed with aggressive tankmates, particularly Mbuna. It is advised to keep a group of at least eight individuals as they are gregarious and may become withdrawn without conspecifics. Compatible tankmates include Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, Cyprichromis, and Tanganyikan Synodontis catfish.

Feeding and Diet

This species is an omnivore that will accept various types of food, but live and frozen varieties should make up the bulk of its diet. Offering a balanced diet will help maintain the health and vibrancy of Descamp's Strange-Tooth Cichlid in captivity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

While reproduction in aquariums is not commonly recorded, it is believed to be possible for the Descamp's Strange-Tooth Cichlid. This species is known to be a polygamous maternal mouthbrooder that spawns in substrate depressions dug by the male. Details on sexual dimorphism are limited, with some sources noting that the male's dorsal spot may be larger than that of the female.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, the Descamp's Strange-Tooth Cichlid inhabits open waters above sandy substrates in Lake Tanganyika. Its distribution range spans from Moliro to Utinta Bay, making this species a unique and fascinating addition to Tanganyikan biotopes in aquariums.
