General Description

Formerly known as Eutropiellus buffei, the Three Striped African Glass Catfish is a midwater swimming, diurnal species characterized by its three lateral stripes along the body. It is peaceful and ideal for community tanks, especially West African biotopes. Adults can reach up to 8.0cm in size and are distinguishable from the closely related Pareutropius debauwi by various features, including stripe count and fin characteristics.

Aquarium Setup

The Three Striped African Glass Catfish requires a tank size of at least 70 litres with water conditions ranging from a hardness of 5-15°dH and a pH of 6.0-7.5. They thrive in temperatures between 24-28°C and prefer ample cover, flowing water, and quiet areas of dense planting in the aquarium. Adequate open swimming space, directed water flow, the use of floating plants, driftwood, and dark substrates are recommended for their well-being.

Behaviour

This species is extremely peaceful in the aquarium, suitable for cohabitation with most common community fish. However, they can be intimidated by large or aggressive species and should be kept in groups of 6 or more to prevent withdrawal and feeding issues. A shoal of these catfish creates a striking visual display, enhancing the tank's aesthetics.

Feeding and Diet

The Three Striped African Glass Catfish is not fussy when it comes to feeding, accepting a variety of dried, frozen, and live foods. While primarily insectivorous in nature, they readily consume bloodworms and benefit from a diverse diet to maintain optimal condition. Regular feeding of varied foods is recommended for their health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Pareutropius Buffei in captivity is feasible, with egg-scattering behavior observed among aquatic plants. Breeding setups with fine-leaved plants like java moss and suitable water conditions (pH 6.5-7.0, temperature 80°F) are recommended. Adult females exhibit increased belly plumpness when filled with eggs, with no other external differentiating features between the sexes.

Habitat and Distribution

Inhabiting rivers and floodplains, the Three Striped African Glass Catfish is native to regions spanning Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Mali, and Guinea. It thrives in freshwater habitats, displaying a preference for areas with ample vegetation and moderate water flow to support its natural behaviors.
