General Description

The Acnodon Normani, commonly known as the Sheep Pacu, is a species in the Serrasalmidae family under the classification order Characiformes. It is distinguishable by its lack of vertical bars on the body, a more or less terminal mouth, and a slender body compared to other species in the genus Acnodon.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank size of at least 300 litres is recommended, providing ample space for a group of these fish if desired (see table for water conditions). The setup should include some cover for the fish, well-oxygenated water, and a moderate flow. Despite being relatively unfussy, live plants in the aquarium are likely to be consumed by the Sheep Pacu.

Behaviour

Due to its tendency to pick at the scales of larger fish, this species is not suitable for a community aquarium. However, it tends not to target significantly smaller species and can be kept in a group as long as enough space is available.

Feeding and Diet

Although often considered a frugivore or herbivore, observations in aquariums suggest that the Sheep Pacu may also consume the scales of other fish. In captivity, they readily adapt to sinking dried and frozen food items.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction of Acnodon Normani is currently unavailable. Larger adult males can be distinguished by the presence of a lobe on the anal fin, located 23-28 rays from the first branched ray, with short, simple, and relatively broad segments.

Habitat and Distribution

These fish are known to inhabit the lower Amazon river basin, with potential restriction to the Xingu and Tocantins watersheds. Found in the rio Sono, a tributary in the rio Tocantins basin, the Sheep Pacu thrives in crystalline waters amidst a savannah landscape, alongside various other sympatric species.
