General Description

Serrasalmus geryi, commonly known as Géry's Pirambeba, is a striking aquarium fish with a unique purple stripe running from the base of its lower jaw over its body. Possessing reflective scales, deep orange/red eyes, and a compressed, high-bodied shape, this species stands out in tanks. It belongs to the Serrasalmidae family and is usually considered unpredictable in tank environments.

Aquarium Setup

In an aquarium setup for S. geryi, a well-oxygenated environment with a sandy substrate, driftwood roots, and branches to mimic its river habitat is recommended. Providing cover with wood and dim to moderate lighting is suggested, and though attempts at aquatic plant growth can be made, be prepared for potential nibbling on plants. Ensuring high water quality with proper filtration, oxygenation, and flow is essential. It's advised to conduct regular partial water changes and consider external placement of heaters due to the species' tendency to attack equipment within the tank.

Behaviour

Considered best suited as a specimen fish due to its carnivorous nature, S. geryi may not make ideal tankmates for other species. Debate surrounds whether this species can be kept in groups, with some aquarists citing successful maintenance of large groups, while others highlight risks of injuries and advise keeping them singly, leaving experimental group setups to experienced individuals with adequate resources.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, S. geryi is known to prey on fins, scales, small fish, and insects. Acclimating them to dead foods may take time, with some individuals being initially hesitant to feed. Juveniles enjoy live or frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, Artemia, prawns, and similar foods, while adults should be fed larger items like mussels, cockles, squid, and earthworms a few times a week. Care should be taken to avoid feeding them mammalian/avian meats or feeder fish to prevent health issues.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Limited information is available on the breeding of S. geryi, but the species is known as a seasonal spawner. Reports suggest simulating wet and dry seasons may be necessary to trigger breeding, with eggs being deposited in shallow pits dug in the substrate. No external sexual differences have been recorded for this species.

Habitat and Distribution

Natively found in the Rio Araguaia and Rio Tocantins drainages in Brazil, S. geryi thrives in turbid waters with high suspended solids content. While usually inhabiting deeper waters, reports of group co-existence have been disputed by experts, highlighting the need for further research on their habitat preferences and social behaviors.
