General Description

The Blue Sheatfish, also known as Kryptopterus Cryptopterus, belongs to the family Siluridae and is classified under Siluriformes. This species is often traded as the 'smokey glass catfish' and is distinguished by characteristics such as a wider head, shorter anal fin, and less laterally-placed eyes compared to its closest relative, K. geminus. These fish are typically found in Southeast Asia and prefer habitats in flowing rivers with turbid water high in suspended sediment.

Aquarium Setup

For the Blue Sheatfish, a minimum tank size of 270 litres is recommended. Decor is not crucial, but they prefer weakly-lit conditions to feel secure. Avoid introducing them to biologically immature aquariums as they can be sensitive to fluctuations in water chemistry. Water conditions should ideally range from a pH of 6.0-7.5, hardness of 36-268ppm, and a temperature of 20-27°C. For further details, refer to the table provided.

Behaviour

Blue Sheatfish are generally peaceful but may prey on smaller fish. They are somewhat timid and do not fare well with larger, more aggressive species. To thrive, it is best to house them with peaceful, similarly-sized companions like cyprinids, loaches, and other catfish. These fish are gregarious and tend to form schools, so it is advisable to keep at least four individuals together.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Blue Sheatfish are predators feeding on crustaceans, invertebrates, and smaller fish. In captivity, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of sinking dried foods, live and frozen bloodworms, Tubifex, and occasional small earthworms. It is unnecessary to offer live prey as part of their diet in captivity.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction details for the Blue Sheatfish are unrecorded, but their closely-related congener K. geminus is known to spawn at the beginning of the wet season. Adult males of the species may appear slimmer than females, although sources provide contradictory information regarding specific dimorphic characteristics.

Habitat and Distribution

The Blue Sheatfish, Kryptopterus Cryptopterus, is found in regions such as the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Sumatra, Borneo, and Java. Populations from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam were previously considered conspecific but are now classified as K. geminus. The type locality for this species is 'Bandjarmassing' in South Kalimantan province, Indonesia.
