General Description

Aspidoras Pauciradiatus, also known as the "false corydoras" or "sixray corydoras," is a member of the Callichthyidae family under the Siluriformes order. It can be distinguished by having 6 soft dorsal-fin rays and a unique color pattern compared to other Aspidoras species. The species is characterized by two cranial fontanels, setting them apart from the similar Corydoras species.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, Aspidoras Pauciradiatus thrives in a group setting of at least 4-6 individuals within a tank of a minimum size of 60 litres. The ideal tank setup includes a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel, along with personal choice decors that provide cover for the fish's security. Stable and clean water conditions are crucial, and the species should not be introduced into a biologically immature environment.

Behaviour

These fish are peaceful and gregarious, showcasing their best behavior when kept in a group setting. Maintaining them in small numbers or in isolation may lead to stress and potential health issues. Thus, it is recommended to house them in small schools to observe their natural and social behaviors.

Feeding and Diet

Aspidoras Pauciradiatus are foraging omnivores that accept most sinking dried foods, small live, and frozen varieties such as chironomid larvae and Tubifex. Offering a varied diet ensures the fish remain in optimal condition. They should not solely rely on leftovers from other tank inhabitants or be expected to clean the aquarium.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The reproduction of Aspidoras Pauciradiatus mirrors that of Corydoras, often triggered by significant water changes with cooler water, particularly during a decrease in barometric pressure. Females tend to be larger, and sexually mature individuals exhibit a rounder and broader body compared to males, particularly when gravid.

Habitat and Distribution

The species' type locality is the "Rio Araguaia near Aruana, Goias State, Brazil," with its distribution primarily limited to the upper Araguaia basin. Aspidoras Pauciradiatus thrives in stable, clean water conditions with a pH range of 6.0-7.0, hardness between 36-215ppm, and a temperature range of 20-27°C.
