General Description

The Acre Cory, scientifically known as Corydoras Acrensis, is a species within the Callichthyidae family, belonging to the order Siluriformes. These fish are part of the diverse genus Corydoras, containing over 150 valid species. They are commonly referred to as "armoured" or "mailed" catfish due to the presence of bony plates instead of scales on their bodies. A facultative air-breather, they possess a modified intestine to facilitate oxygen uptake from the atmosphere, aiding survival in low-oxygen environments.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, it is recommended to keep Acre Cory in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. The tank setup should include fine sand or clean rounded gravel as substrate. Providing adequate cover in the form of plants or caves is essential to offer the fish a sense of security. Behaviour

Known for their peaceful and gregarious nature, Acre Cory thrives in social settings. Maintaining them in a group helps reduce stress and promotes natural shoaling behavior. They possess stiffened pectoral-fin spines that can cause painful stings, necessitating careful handling when necessary.

Feeding and Diet

Acre Cory, like other Corydoras species, are foraging omnivores. They readily accept sinking dried foods and can also be fed small live or frozen varieties like bloodworms and Tubifex. A varied diet ensures their optimum health, as they should not rely on leftover food from other tank inhabitants to thrive.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Female Acre Cory exhibit a rounder and broader body shape compared to males, particularly when gravid. These fish spawn adhesive eggs, with the males fertilizing them as they are deposited. Breeding can be induced with proper conditioning and a suitable environment that mimics natural habitats.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the Rio Juruá basin in Acre State, Brazil, Corydoras Acrensis is primarily found in the type locality of Furo do Lago São Francisco. The species inhabits freshwater environments within the region, showcasing a preference for specific water parameters such as pH levels between 6.0-7.5 and water hardness ranging from 36-215ppm.
