General Description

The Corydoras Acutus, commonly known as the Blacktop Cory, is a member of the Callichthyidae family. Belonging to the order Siluriformes, these fish possess a distinct appearance, characterized by rows of bony plates on their flanks. They can grow up to 7.0cm in size and are considered facultative air breathers, often seen rising to the aquarium surface to gulp air. Care must be taken when handling them due to the stinging potential of their pectoral-fin spines.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, the Blacktop Cory thrives in an aquarium with a fine sand substrate or rounded gravel, which should be meticulously maintained. While the tank's décor is largely a matter of preference, providing some cover is essential to ensure the fish feel secure. Water conditions should range from a hardness of 36-215ppm, a pH of 6.0-7.5, and a temperature between 22-28°C (see table).

Behaviour

These Corydoras are known to exhibit rounder and broader-bodied features, particularly in sexually mature females. The fish are active foragers and often seen scavenging the aquarium bottom. They are capable of surviving on a varied diet, but it is crucial to provide them with a mix of sinking dried foods, live, and frozen varieties to maintain their health.

Feeding and Diet

Blacktop Corys are foraging omnivores, accepting a variety of sinking dried foods, small live, and frozen options such as bloodworms and Tubifex. A diverse diet ensures the fish remain in optimal condition. Relying on ‘leftovers’ from other tank inhabitants is not recommended, as these fish should not be solely relied upon to ‘clean’ the aquarium.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

When it comes to reproduction, female Blacktop Corys tend to grow larger and are noticeably rounder and broader-bodied, especially when gravid, compared to males. This sexual dimorphism distinguishes mature individuals, showcasing distinct physical differences based on gender.

Habitat and Distribution

The Blacktop Cory, Corydoras Acutus, is native to the upper Amazon basin, spanning regions of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and possibly Bolivia. Their distribution includes rivers like Yavarí, Abunã, Nueva Rocafuerte, and Huitoyacu, with slight variations in appearance based on their collection locality.
