General Description

The Adolfo's Cory (Corydoras Adolfoi) belongs to the Callichthyidae family within the Siluriformes order. Recognizable by an oblique dark bar along its dorsal surface, it is part of a group of congeners native to the rio Negro region. Known for its peaceful and gregarious nature, this species is commonly maintained in groups of 4-6 individuals.

Aquarium Setup

For a suitable aquarium setup, refer to the table provided. It is recommended to have a substrate of fine sand or rounded gravel, clean decorations for security, and gentle filtration. Driftwood and dried leaves can be added to mimic natural conditions and provide food sources for microorganisms, beneficial for fry. Water conditions should ideally maintain a pH of 4.0-7.0, hardness of 18-90ppm, and a temperature range of 20-26°C.

Behaviour

Adolfo's Cory is known for its peaceful and gregarious nature, thriving best when kept in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. They are facultative air breathers and possess stiff pectoral-fin spines capable of causing painful stings, emphasizing the need for careful handling. This species tends to forage actively and can occasionally be seen rising to the water's surface to gulp air.

Feeding and Diet

As foraging omnivores, Adolfo's Cory accepts a variety of sinking dried foods, along with small live and frozen options such as bloodworms and Tubifex. A diverse diet ensures optimum health, as they should not rely on leftovers from other tank inhabitants. To maintain their well-being, avoid expecting them to clean the aquarium and provide a diet that supports their nutritional needs.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Adolfo's Cory is similar to other Corydoras species. Maintaining a ratio of 2 males per female during breeding can be beneficial. Females tend to grow larger, with mature individuals exhibiting a rounder and broader body shape, especially when gravid. Spawning usually occurs on the aquarium glass, and care must be taken to provide suitable spawning sites and maintain water quality for the fry's development.

Habitat and Distribution

Adolfo's Cory inhabits pristine blackwater tributaries and flooded forest areas in the rio Negro basin. These habitats are characterized by tea-colored water with low hardness, low conductivity, and a pH of 4.0-6.0. In the wild, they coexist with small characids, lebiasinids, and Apistogramma dwarf cichlids. The species' type locality is a small tributary of the upper Rio Negro near São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Brazil, showing high endemism in that region.
