General Description
Corydoras amandajanea is a rare species in the aquarium trade, known for its variability in color patterns. Belonging to the family Callichthyidae, these catfish are often referred to as "armoured" or "mailed" due to their bony plates instead of scales. They are among the largest catfish groups and are facultative air breathers, occasionally rising to the surface to gulp air. Members of the genus Corydoras are known for their taxonomy complexity, with many undescribed species still believed to exist.
Aquarium Setup
The ideal tank setup for Corydoras amandajanea includes a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel. Decor should be chosen based on personal preference while ensuring the provision of cover for the fish's security. Water conditions should be maintained within a hardness range of 36-215 ppm, a pH range of 6.0-7.5, and a temperature range of 23-27°C (see table).
Behaviour
These catfish are known to be peaceful and gregarious, enjoying the company of their kind. It is recommended to keep them in groups of at least 4-6 individuals to ensure their well-being in captivity.
Feeding and Diet
Corydoras amandajanea are foraging omnivores that accept a variety of sinking dried foods, as well as small live and frozen varieties like bloodworms and Tubifex. Maintaining a varied diet is crucial for their optimal health as they should not solely rely on leftovers in the aquarium.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Sexual dimorphism is observed in Corydoras amandajanea, with females tending to grow larger and exhibit a rounder and broader body, especially when gravid. Little is known about their reproduction habits in captivity.
Habitat and Distribution
The type locality for C. amandajanea is the Rio Miuã system of streams in Brazil. However, additional information about their habitat and distribution is limited. They are presumed to occur sympatrically with the congener C. crypticus, which was described from the same locality.
