General Description

The Corydoras Arcuatus, commonly known as the Skunk Cory or by its C number C020, is a popular species within the aquarium hobby. Belonging to the Callichthyidae family and order Siluriformes, this species showcases distinctive features including being an omnivorous forager and possessing an armoured body with bony plates instead of scales. Typically reaching a maximum size of 5.5cm, these fish are facultative air breathers due to a specialized intestine allowing them to take in atmospheric oxygen.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, it is recommended to maintain Corydoras Arcuatus in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. The tank setup should include a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel, providing adequate security with additional decor such as plants or driftwood. Water conditions should be maintained within a pH range of 5.0-7.5, a temperature range of 20-28°C, and a hardness level of 36-215 ppm.

Behaviour

Skunk Cory is known to exhibit peaceful and gregarious behavior. Thriving in social settings, they should be housed in groups to prevent stress and promote natural interactions. Individuals may occasionally rise to the surface to gulp air, a behavior attributed to their facultative air-breathing capabilities.

Feeding and Diet

As foragers, Corydoras Arcuatus are omnivores that accept a variety of sinking dried foods and live or frozen options such as bloodworms and Tubifex. Maintaining a diverse diet ensures optimal health for the fish, as they should not solely rely on leftovers or aquarium cleaning tasks.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

In terms of sexual dimorphism, females tend to grow larger than males, with mature females displaying a rounder and broader-bodied appearance, especially when gravid. Habitat and Distribution

Corydoras Arcuatus is native to the upper Amazon region spanning Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. Found in various drainage basins including Solimões, Purus, and Ucayali, this species prefers freshwater habitats with moderate water flow. Records suggest its presence upstream of the confluence between the Río Negro and the Amazon main channel, indicating a wide distribution throughout the Amazon basin.
