Behaviour
The Tailspot Cory is a peaceful and gregarious fish that thrives in groups of at least 4-6 individuals, showcasing a social nature in an aquarium setting.
Feeding and Diet
Corydoras Caudimaculatus are foraging omnivores that readily accept sinking dried foods, along with small live and frozen varieties like bloodworms and Tubifex. Ensuring a varied diet is crucial for their optimal health, as they should not solely rely on leftover food from other tank inhabitants.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding these fish follows a similar pattern to other Corydoras species, with a recommended ratio of 2 males per female for successful breeding. Female Tailspot Corys grow larger than males, and sexually mature females appear rounder and higher-bodied. Eggs are typically laid on the aquarium glass, but offering fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops as alternatives is beneficial. After incubation, fry can transition to small live foods like microworms and Artemia nauplii.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Rio Guaporé drainage in western Brazil and northeastern Bolivia, specifically known as the Iténez in Bolivia, Corydoras Caudimaculatus inhabits these South American regions with a distinct dark spot on the caudal peduncle.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, setup the aquarium with fine sand substrate or clean rounded gravel. Personalized decor choices can be added, although providing sufficient cover is essential to create a sense of security for the fish.
General Description
Corydoras Caudimaculatus, also known as the Tailspot Cory, distinguishes itself with a defined blackish spot on the caudal peduncle. Belonging to the family Callichthyidae, these fish are part of a diverse group of catfish species known for their "armoured" bodies. With a maximum size of 5.0cm, these facultative air breathers possess stiff pectoral-fin spines that can inflict pain if mishandled.
