General Description:
The Corydoras Cochui, also known as the Barredtail Cory, belongs to the family Callichthyidae. These fish are small in size, with distinguishing features including 4-5 dark markings along the side of their bodies. They are part of the genus Corydoras, which is recognized for its extensive variety of over 150 valid species. The Callichthyidae family members, including the Corydoras Cochui, are commonly referred to as "armoured" or "mailed" catfish due to bony plates instead of scales covering their bodies.

Aquarium Setup:
Creating an optimal tank environment for Corydoras Cochui involves using fine sand or clean rounded gravel as a substrate. Additionally, it is recommended to provide sufficient hiding spots for security, although the choice of tank decor largely depends on personal preference. Detailed water conditions such as a pH range of 6.0-7.5, a temperature range of 20-28°C, and a water hardness of 36-179 ppm should be maintained (see table).

Behaviour:
Barredtail Corydoras are known to be peaceful and sociable fish. To thrive in captivity, it is advised to keep them in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. These fish may display occasional surface-breathing behavior, as they are facultative air breathers. It is essential to handle them carefully as their pectoral-fin spines can cause painful injuries.

Feeding and Diet:
Corydoras Cochui are foraging omnivores that readily accept various sinking dried foods, as well as small live and frozen options like bloodworms and Tubifex. To maintain optimal health, a varied diet is recommended rather than relying on leftover food from other tank inhabitants.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:
Information on the specific reproductive behavior and dimorphic characteristics of the Barredtail Corydoras is not provided.

Habitat and Distribution:
These fish are native to the upper Rio Araguaia in central Brazil. The type locality for Corydoras Cochui is documented as "Rio Araguay, Santa Maria Nova, Goyaz, Brazil," referring to the Araguaia River in Goiás state.

Etymology:
The genus name "Corydoras" is derived from the Ancient Greek words "korus" meaning "helmet" and "dora" meaning "skin, hide of an animal," reflecting the bony plates on the flanks of the species. The species epithet "Cochui" honors the late ornamental fish exporter Fred Cochu.
