General Description

The Slate Cory, scientifically known as Corydoras concolor, is a member of the Callichthyidae family, characterized by its uniformly greyish color pattern, deep body, large eye, and unique anatomical features like a relatively long dorsal-fin spine. Inhabiting the Orinoco river system in western Venezuela, these catfish are part of the "armoured" or "mailed" catfish group due to their bony plates instead of scales. The species' taxonomy is intricate, with over 150 recognized species and the likelihood of more undocumented ones in existence.

Aquarium Setup

When keeping Slate Corys in captivity, it is essential to have a well-decorated tank with fine sand or clean rounded gravel as the substrate. The fish need some cover for security, and they are most comfortable in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. The water parameters should ideally be maintained at a hardness of 18-143ppm, a pH of 5.5-7.0, and a temperature range between 20-26°C (see table).

Behaviour

Known for their peaceful and gregarious nature, Slate Corys thrive when kept in groups. Their facultative air-breathing ability allows them to take in atmospheric oxygen, often seen as they rise to the tank's surface for gulps of air. Caution is advised when handling them due to their sharp pectoral-fin spines, which can cause painful stings.

Feeding and Diet

These foraging omnivores readily accept sinking dried foods, alongside small live and frozen varieties such as bloodworms and Tubifex. To maintain optimal health, a varied diet is crucial, as they should not rely on tank leftovers for sustenance. Slate Corys play a minor role in tank cleaning and should not be expected to fulfill this task entirely.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

During reproduction, female Slate Corys deposit their eggs on aquarium glass or among fine-leaved vegetation. Males typically develop extended dorsal fins, while sexually mature females grow larger and display a rounder, broader body shape, especially when gravid. Incubation periods for the eggs last approximately 3-4 days, after which the fry can feed on small live foods. It is noted that these fish face fewer health issues when bred over a thin layer of sand.

Habitat and Distribution

The Slate Cory's distribution is limited to select areas within the Orinoco river system in western Venezuela. Its type locality is specified as 'Las Mangas, in a tributary of Rio Parguaza, western Bolivar State, Venezuela.' The species' ability to adapt to fluctuating oxygen levels in its native environment is aided by its modified, oxygen-absorbing intestine, which allows it to survive in oxygen-deprived conditions.
