General Description
Corydoras Condiscipulus, a member of the Callichthyidae family, is a peaceful and gregarious species that should ideally be kept in a group of at least 4-6 individuals. They belong to the order Siluriformes and are classified under the genus Corydoras, known for its "armoured" or "mailed" catfishes due to bony plates instead of scales on their bodies. This species is an omnivore and should be fed a varied diet to maintain optimum health.
Aquarium Setup
For Corydoras Condiscipulus, a minimum tank size of 80 litres is recommended, with water conditions maintained at a pH range of 6.0-7.5, hardness between 36-215ppm, and a temperature of 20-26°C. It is important to provide a substrate of fine sand or rounded gravel, ensuring cleanliness. Additional decor, such as hiding spots, should be included to offer security to the fish (see table).
Behaviour
Known for their social nature, Corydoras Condiscipulus is a species that thrives in the company of its own kind. They are peaceful fish that exhibit schooling behavior and interact positively when kept in groups. Being facultative air breathers, they may occasionally rise to the surface of the aquarium to gulp air.
Feeding and Diet
Corydoras Condiscipulus is an omnivorous species that readily accepts sinking dried foods, live, and frozen varieties such as bloodworms and Tubifex. It's essential to provide a diverse diet to ensure the fish's well-being, as they should not rely on leftovers or algae in the tank for sustenance.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Female Corydoras Condiscipulus tend to be larger than males, with sexually mature individuals displaying a rounder and broader body shape, especially when gravid. Successful breeding can occur in well-maintained aquarium conditions, with females depositing their adhesive eggs on surfaces in the tank.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the Oyapock river system in French Guiana and Amapá state, Brazil, Corydoras Condiscipulus is commonly found alongside the similar-looking congener C. oiapoquensis. These fish inhabit various parts of the Oyapock system and are adapted to survive in oxygen-deprived environments.
