General Description
The Corydoras Copei is a species included in the family Callichthyidae, characterized by its armored appearance due to bony plates instead of scales on its body. They are facultative air breathers, possessing a specialized intestine adapted for absorbing oxygen from the air. These catfish are often assigned placeholder names like 'C' or 'CW' due to taxonomy confusion, with over 150 species within the Corydoras genus.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, a tank size of at least 96 litres is recommended, with a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel. Decor should include hiding spots for security, and water conditions maintained at a temperature of 20-26°C, pH of 5.0-7.0, and hardness between 36-215ppm (see table).
Behaviour
Corydoras Copei are peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups of 4-6 individuals. They exhibit gregarious behavior within their species and should not be kept alone to prevent stress. These catfish occasionally rise to the water's surface to gulp in air due to their air-breathing capability.
Feeding and Diet
As foraging omnivores, Corydoras Copei accept various sinking dried foods, small live, and frozen options like bloodworms and Tubifex. A varied diet ensures their optimal health, and they should not rely solely on tank leftovers for nutrition. Maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for their well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Corydoras Copei follows a pattern similar to other species in the genus. A ratio of 2 males per female is ideal for breeding success. Females are usually larger than males, with visibly rounder bodies when sexually mature. Eggs are typically laid on the aquarium glass and should be removed post-spawning, ensuring a safe environment for hatching and raising the fry.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Pastaza basin in Peru, Corydoras Copei's distribution also includes potential habitats in the lower Rio Marañón. They are found in specific tributaries like the Rio Samiria. Their natural habitats consist of freshwater environments with suitable conditions for their survival and reproduction.
