General Description
The Santa Cruz Cory, scientifically known as Corydoras Cruziensis, belongs to the family Callichthyidae within the classification order of Siluriformes. These fish are part of the diverse genus Corydoras, recognized for their unique bony plates instead of scales, with over 150 valid species identified. Santa Cruz Cory is characterized by larger dark markings on the body, which can form irregular midlateral stripes. They possess a modified intestine for air breathing, a feature that aids them in low-oxygen environments. The stiff pectoral-fin spines are capable of piercing human skin, causing discomfort due to potential mild toxicity or venom from axillary glands.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, Santa Cruz Cory should be housed in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. The recommended tank size is a minimum of 96 liters, with water conditions set at a pH range of 6.0-8.5, hardness between 36-215ppm, and a temperature range of 20-28°C. A substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel is suitable, with additional decor choices made based on personal preference, ensuring there is ample cover for the fish's security.
Behaviour
Santa Cruz Cory is known to be peaceful and gregarious, thriving in group settings. Their social nature necessitates keeping them in small schools to promote their well-being and exhibit their natural behaviors comfortably.
Feeding and Diet
As foraging omnivores, Corydoras Cruziensis accepts a variety of sinking dried foods, along with small live and frozen options like bloodworms and Tubifex. Maintaining a diverse diet is crucial to ensure optimal health, as they should not rely on leftover food from other aquarium inhabitants for sustenance.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Females of the Santa Cruz Cory species tend to grow larger than males, with sexually mature individuals displaying a rounder and more elevated body shape. Specific dimorphic traits aid in distinguishing between male and female specimens during maturity.
Habitat and Distribution
The Santa Cruz Cory's distribution is primarily limited to the Bolivian part of the Río Madeira basin, potentially extending to the Mamoré and Beni tributary drainages. The species was initially described near Guarayos, Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia, at an elevation of 215 meters. The habitat preference of these armored catfish includes areas with peaceful waters and ample hiding spots for security.
