General Description
The Corydoras Delphax, a species in the Callichthyidae family under the order Siluriformes, is a popular aquarium fish often misidentified as other similar-looking congeners. These fish, also known as armored or mailed catfishes, have bony plates instead of scales on their bodies. They possess a modified intestine for air breathing, aiding their survival in oxygen-deprived environments. Characterized by an elongated snout and dark spots on their bodies that fade with age, precise diagnostic features distinguishing them from similar species are challenging to determine due to limited available information.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, a tank setup with at least 80 liters of water is recommended, using fine sand or rounded gravel as the substrate. Providing hiding spots and cover for security is essential in the aquarium. Water conditions should maintain a pH range of 5.5-7.5, a temperature between 22-27°C, and hardness between 36-215ppm. Detailed information on tank setup can be found in the provided table.
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful and social nature, Corydoras Delphax thrive when kept in groups of 4-6 individuals. These fish are gregarious and should not be housed alone to prevent stress.
Feeding and Diet
Corydoras Delphax are omnivores that accept a variety of sinking dried foods, live, and frozen selections like bloodworms and Tubifex. Maintaining a diverse diet ensures their well-being, as these fish should not solely rely on leftovers from other tank mates.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Corydoras Delphax involves a ratio of 2 males per female, inducing spawning with cooler water and increased oxygenation. Eggs can be deposited on various surfaces, with spawning mops being a recommended choice for easy egg removal. Female Corydoras Delphax grow larger with a rounder body shape than males.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the upper Orinoco basins in western Colombia and northeastern Peru, Corydoras Delphax has been recorded in the Río Inírida. They originate from specific locations like Guainía in Colombia, thriving in freshwater habitats within their natural range.
