General Description
The Ellis Cory Cat, scientifically known as Corydoras ellisae, is a member of the Callichthyidae family, characterized by its silver body with shimmery yellow accents on the rear half of the underbody, fins, and face. This small freshwater fish typically grows up to 2 inches in size, with females being larger and fuller-bodied than males. Females have rounded fins, as opposed to the pointed fins of males.
Aquarium Setup
To create a suitable habitat for the Ellisae Cory Cat, it is advisable to have a well-planted aquarium with ample hiding spots to offer relief from bright lighting. These bottom-dwelling scavengers thrive in environments with smooth sand or gravel substrates to prevent damage to their barbels. As schooling fish, it is recommended to keep them in groups of six or more in a community tank of at least 80 liters.
Behaviour
Ellisae Cory Cats are known for their peaceful temperament, making them ideal additions to community tanks. They are bottom-dwellers that exhibit schooling behavior, often found foraging and exploring their surroundings together.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Ellisae Cory Cats require a balanced diet to thrive. Their food intake should consist of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen or thawed bloodworms, brine shrimp, and Mysis shrimp. These small-mouthed fish are adept at consuming a variety of food sources to meet their nutritional needs.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Females of the species lay eggs in groups of 2 to 4, attaching them to plants or other surfaces post-fertilization. The female repeats this process until approximately 100 eggs are fertilized and secured. Breeding considerations may involve setting up a separate tank to safeguard the eggs or fry from potential predation.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Ellisae Cory Catfish inhabit freshwater environments with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5 and temperatures between 22.2-26.1°C (72-79°F). These fish are native to specific regions and are typically found in South American waters.
