General Description

The Corydoras Guapore, commonly known as the Guaporé Cory, belongs to the Callichthyidae family within the Siluriformes order. It is a sought-after aquarium fish, displaying unique behavior compared to its congeners, with adaptations for a pelagic existence such as a more terminal mouth position and a symmetrical body shape.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal keeping, a group of at least 4-6 Guaporé Cory individuals should be maintained in an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 80 litres. It is recommended to provide a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel, along with driftwood roots, branches, leaf litter, and live vegetation for security and cover.

Behaviour

The Guaporé Cory is known to be peaceful and gregarious, often forming aggregations in midwater and spending a significant amount of time away from the substrate. This species is an omnivorous forager and is best housed in groups to thrive in an aquarium setting.

Feeding and Diet

As for feeding, the Guaporé Cory is an omnivore that accepts various sinking dried foods and small live or frozen varieties like chironomid larvae and Tubifex. It is slightly different from other Corydoras species, requiring a diet rich in live Daphnia and Artemia due to its partial adaptation for foraging on pelagic zooplankton.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Guaporé Cory in captivity is infrequent, with successful methods typically involving spawning mops for egg deposition and meticulous care during the incubation period. Sexual dimorphism is observable as females tend to grow larger and are broader and deeper-bodied than males.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the Rio Guaporé in Bolivia and Brazil, this species thrives in the warm, clear water of this acidic, tannin-stained river. Its distribution extends through various tributary drainages within the upper Rio Madeira basin, with a recorded range likely spanning rivers in Noel Kempff Mercado National Park.
