General Description

The Mosaic Cory (Corydoras Haraldschultzi) is a species belonging to the Callichthyidae family under the order Siluriformes. These catfish are recognized for their distinctive appearance, with dark vermiculations and spots on a light background around the head and predorsal area. They grow up to 8.5cm in size, with females typically being larger and broader than males. The Mosaic Cory is part of the armored catfish group, characterized by bony plates instead of scales on their bodies.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, Mosaic Corys should be kept in groups of at least 4-6 individuals in a tank of minimum 160 liters. The recommended tank setup includes a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel, with additional decor for shelter. Water conditions should maintain a temperature of 24-28°C, pH levels between 5.5-7.5, and moderate hardness between 36-179ppm.

Behaviour

Mosaic Corys are known to be peaceful and social fish, thriving in the company of their species. They exhibit gregarious behavior and should be housed in a group to ensure their well-being and mental health.

Feeding and Diet

As foraging omnivores, Mosaic Corys accept a varied diet, including sinking dried foods, small live, and frozen varieties such as bloodworms, Tubifex, and other suitable options. To keep them in optimum condition, it is crucial to provide a diverse diet instead of relying on leftovers or expecting them to clean the aquarium.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Mosaic Corys is similar to other Corydoras species. A ratio of two or more males per female is preferable during breeding. Females are larger and visibly broader when mature. Spawning usually involves depositing eggs on various surfaces, and it is recommended to remove adults or eggs post-spawning for better survival rates of the fry.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the acidic and tannin-stained rio Guaporé in northeastern Bolivia and western Brazil, the Mosaic Cory thrives in warm, clear waters. Their distribution includes the upper rio Madeira basin, a significant tributary of the middle Amazon basin.
