General Description
Corydoras Incolicana, belonging to the Callichthyidae family within the Siluriformes order, is a species of catfish known for its characteristic bony plates instead of scales on its body. This species was designated a 'C' number in 1993 and is part of the diverse genus Corydoras, which comprises over 150 valid species. They are facultative air breathers with a modified intestine for absorbing atmospheric oxygen.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, a tank size of at least 160 liters is recommended, with decorations like driftwood branches and leaf litter providing cover. A substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel is suitable. Water conditions with a pH range of 4.0-7.0, hardness of 18-90ppm, and a temperature of 20-26°C are ideal for their habitat.
Behaviour
These catfish are known to be peaceful and social creatures, thriving best when kept in groups of 4-6 individuals. Their gregarious nature makes them a great addition to community tanks with compatible tank mates. They occasionally rise to the water's surface to gulp air due to their facultative air-breathing capability.
Feeding and Diet
Corydoras Incolicana are foraging omnivores that accept sinking dried foods, live, and frozen varieties like bloodworms and Tubifex. A varied diet is essential to ensure they remain in prime condition. It is crucial not to rely on leftover food in the tank for their sustenance.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding these catfish involves maintaining a ratio of males to females, performing water changes with cooler water, and increasing oxygenation to stimulate spawning. Eggs are typically laid on the aquarium glass or in spawning mops, and fry require small live foods once hatched. Female Corydoras Incolicana generally grow larger and have a broader, deeper body shape compared to males.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat of pristine blackwater tributaries and flooded forest areas, Corydoras Incolicana resides in the Rio Içana in Brazil. The water is typically stained dark with organic compounds, has low hardness and conductivity, and a pH of 4.0-6.0. This species coexists with small characids, lebiasinids, and Apistogramma dwarf cichlids in its habitat.
