General Description
Corydoras kanei, also known as C026 or C046, is a member of the Callichthyidae family within the order Siluriformes. These catfish are part of the armored catfish group due to the presence of bony plates on their bodies. With over 150 valid species, Corydoras is recognized as one of the largest catfish genera. They are facultative air breathers, possessing a unique intestinal adaptation for absorbing atmospheric oxygen, allowing them to thrive in oxygen-deprived environments.
Aquarium Setup
For keeping Corydoras kanei in captivity, a tank size of at least 80 litres is recommended. It is advisable to maintain them in groups of 4-6 individuals. The tank should ideally have a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel. Providing some decor for cover is essential to offer the fish a sense of security within the aquarium setup. Water conditions should be maintained within a temperature range of 20-26°C, with a pH level of 5.5-7.5 and a hardness of 36-179ppm. (see table)
Behaviour
Corydoras kanei are known to be peaceful and gregarious in nature. These fish thrive when kept in groups, preferably with a minimum of 4-6 individuals. They exhibit schooling behavior and feel more secure and less stressed when in the company of their own kind.
Feeding and Diet
As foraging omnivores, Corydoras kanei accept a varied diet that includes sinking dried foods, small live, and frozen varieties like chironomid larvae and Tubifex. Ensuring a diverse diet is crucial to keep the fish in optimal condition. They should not solely rely on leftover food in the aquarium and should be provided with adequate nutrition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Corydoras kanei follows a similar pattern to other Corydoras species. A higher male-to-female ratio is recommended during breeding, along with environmental triggers like cooler water, increased oxygenation, and tank flow. Females tend to grow larger and have a broader and deeper-bodied appearance compared to males.
Habitat and Distribution
The precise distribution of Corydoras kanei is uncertain, but it is believed to originate from the rio Negro basin, potentially limited to the affluent rio Branco drainage. The species was first described from an aquarium specimen, possibly from Brazil, Roraima State near Boa Vista, primarily within the Rio Branco vicinity.
