General Description
The Corydoras Pastazensis, commonly known as the Pastaza Cory, is a member of the Callichthyidae family within the order Siluriformes. These fish are distinguishable by their armored bodies, with bony plates instead of scales. The species can reach a maximum size of 7.0cm and typically requires a minimum tank size of 80 liters for proper housing.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, it's recommended to house the Pastaza Cory in a group of at least 6-8 individuals, providing a substrate of fine sand or rounded gravel. The tank should be decorated with personal choice decor, ensuring some cover is available for the fish's security. Specific water conditions of 36-215ppm hardness, a pH range of 5.0-7.0, and a temperature of 22-28°C should be maintained (see table).
Behaviour
These catfish exhibit peaceful and gregarious behavior, thriving best when kept in a group setting. They are known to be facultative air breathers, rising to the water's surface to gulp air occasionally. It's important to note that their pectoral-fin spines can cause painful stings, possibly due to toxic secretions from axillary glands.
Feeding and Diet
Pastaza Corydoras are foraging omnivores that accept various sinking dried foods, live, and frozen varieties such as bloodworms and Tubifex. Offering a varied diet ensures the fish remain in optimal condition, as they should not rely on leftovers in the aquarium for sustenance.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Sexual dimorphism in the species is evident in the females, which tend to grow larger and become rounder and broader-bodied, especially when gravid. Reproduction occurs through egg-laying, with females typically being the larger of the two sexes.
Habitat and Distribution
These fish are native to the upper regions of the Pastaza River basin in Ecuador, as well as the Ucayali and Puinahua rivers in Peru (see distribution). While there may be confusion surrounding specific species within the genus Corydoras, these catfish are known to inhabit oxygen-deprived environments and have adapted to facilitate oxygen uptake from the air.
