General Description
Corydoras Simulatus, belonging to the family Callichthyidae within the order Siluriformes, is a peaceful and gregarious species that thrives in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. Known for their small rictal barbels, these fish exhibit varied color patterns based on their collection locality, with some mistakenly identified in the past. They are categorized as omnivores requiring a diverse diet for optimal health and should not solely rely on scavenging for food in the aquarium.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, it is recommended to maintain Corydoras Simulatus in an aquarium with a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel. Additional décor can be personalized, but it is essential to provide cover for the fish to feel secure. Water conditions should ideally be within a pH range of 6.0-7.0, a temperature range of 20-25°C, and a hardness level of 36-215ppm (see table).
Behaviour
These species are known to be peaceful and social creatures, displaying optimal behavior when housed in groups of sufficient size. They occasionally rise to the water surface to gulp air due to their facultative air-breathing nature. Care should be taken when handling them as their pectoral-fin spines can cause painful stings, potentially due to secretions from axillary glands.
Feeding and Diet
Corydoras Simulatus are foraging omnivores that readily accept sinking dried foods, along with small live and frozen varieties like bloodworms and Tubifex. A varied diet is crucial to maintaining these fish in good condition, as they should not rely solely on leftovers in the aquarium for sustenance.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Females of Corydoras Simulatus are distinguishable by their rounder and broader bodies, particularly when gravid, and they tend to grow about 5mm larger than males. Information on specific reproductive behaviors and dimorphic features is limited for this species.
Habitat and Distribution
The species' type locality is mentioned near Puerto López, Colombia, specifically within the upper Meta watershed. Corydoras Simulatus is exclusively known to inhabit the upper Meta watershed area, showcasing a limited distribution range.
