General Description

The Scleromystax Sp. C113 is part of the Callichthyidae family, known for their bony plates instead of scales on their bodies, earning them the nickname “armoured” or “mailed” catfishes. This species is believed to be one of the unidentified Scleromystax species found in the aquarium trade. They are facultative air breathers, possessing a modified intestine adapted to take in atmospheric oxygen, aiding in survival in low-oxygen environments.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank of at least 160 litres is recommended, with a substrate of fine sand or clean rounded gravel. Additional décor should be provided, especially if housing multiple males to offer hiding spots. Water conditions should be maintained at a pH of 5.0-7.5, a temperature range of 16-24°C, and a hardness of 18-179ppm (see table).

Behaviour

While typically peaceful, male Scleromystax Sp. C113 exhibit aggressive territorial behavior towards each other, necessitating separate housing in smaller tanks. Care must be taken while handling them due to their pectoral-fin spines, which can cause painful stings.

Feeding and Diet

As foraging omnivores, Scleromystax Sp. C113 will accept various foods, including sinking dried foods, live, and frozen varieties like bloodworms and Tubifex. A diverse diet ensures their well-being, as they should not rely on leftovers or being the "cleaners" of the tank.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding this species involves maintaining a ratio of one male per female to prevent male aggression. Spawning can be induced by performing large water changes with cooler water and increased tank oxygenation when the female is full of eggs. Male Scleromystax Sp. C113 exhibit more intense patterns and longer fins than females.

Habitat and Distribution

These catfish originate from the coastal areas of Bahia in eastern Brazil, particularly south of Salvador da Bahia city. Their natural habitat includes areas with well-oxygenated waters and fine-leaved vegetation.
