General Description
Acestridium Dichromum, commonly known as the Dichromum, is a species belonging to the Loricariidae family within the order Siluriformes. It is a small fish, with a maximum size reaching 6.5cm. The etymology of its scientific name comes from the Greek words for "hook" and "two colors," likely referencing its ability to change body coloration.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Acestridium Dichromum, it is essential to replicate its natural habitat. This includes providing hiding spots like driftwood and caves, as well as plenty of gentle water flow and a sandy substrate. Water parameters should be maintained within the typical ranges for freshwater tropical fish. For more detailed information, refer to the table.
Behaviour
The Dichromum is known for its peaceful temperament, making it a suitable addition to community aquariums. These fish are primarily bottom-dwellers, often seen grazing on algae and biofilm. They are relatively shy and prefer subdued lighting conditions.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Acestridium Dichromum feeds on algae, small invertebrates, and organic debris. In an aquarium setting, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini and cucumber, sinking pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information on the reproduction and dimorphism of Acestridium Dichromum is limited. However, like many other Loricariidae species, they are likely to be egg layers that exhibit some form of parental care. Males may develop distinctive features such as odontodes (bony structures) as they mature.
Habitat and Distribution
Acestridium Dichromum is native to the upper Rio Negro basin in Brazil, the upper Orinoco in Venezuela, and the waterways between them, including the Casiquiare Canal. The type locality for this species is described as a tributary of the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela.
