General Description

The Ancistrus Claro, commonly known as Lda 008 or Gold Marble Bristlenose, is a species within the Loricariidae family of the Siluriformes order. It is differentiated by its long maxillary barbels that are free from the lower lip, with males displaying small spots on the head and vermiform lines on the body, while females exhibit spots all over. This diverse genus, comprising over 60 species, is distributed from Panama to Argentina, characterized by well-developed interopercular spines and a lack of plates and odontodes on the snout.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, Ancistrus Claro thrives in a tank mimicking a flowing stream environment. Maintaining a minimum tank size of 60 liters, the setup should include substrates of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and boulders. Adding driftwood branches, terracotta pipes, and plant pots creates a network of hiding spots and shaded areas, enhancing the aquarium's structure and providing security for the species (see table for water conditions).

Behaviour

This diurnally-active species is peaceful but slightly territorial towards conspecifics and similar species. When several are kept together, a well-structured aquarium with ample hiding places reduces aggression. Ancistrus Claro can be part of a community tank if properly managed.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, this species is an omnivorous forager, showing a preference for aquatic invertebrates. When kept in an aquarium, a varied diet is essential, including sinking dried foods, frozen Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and fresh vegetables. Homemade gelatin-bound foods with a mix of natural ingredients cater to specific dietary requirements, incorporating Spirulina and meatier components.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Ancistrus Claro is a cave-spawner with males handling brood care. Successful breeding has been achieved in captivity, with juveniles appearing in well-maintained setups naturally. Male adults exhibit developed odontodes on pectoral fins and opercle, along with head tentacles, distinguishing them from females.

Habitat and Distribution

Inhabiting streams with boulders and bedrock, Ancistrus Claro is found in the upper rio Cuaibá drainage in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The species' distribution extends to the Pantanal wetlands, with its type locality in the rio Claro of Mato Grosso.
