General Description
The Bushy Nose (L-144) Plecostomus, also known as the Orange Bushy Nose Plecostomus, is a peaceful freshwater fish from the rivers and tributaries of South America. It features an orange body with dark brown or black markings, with whisker-like appendages around its mouth and nose. This species belongs to the Loricariidae family and can grow up to 12.7 cm in length.
Aquarium Setup
A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended for the Bushy Nose Plecostomus. To create a suitable environment, incorporate hearty, fast-growing plants, rocks, driftwood, high aeration, and water movement. These elements provide hiding spots and mimic the fish's natural habitat. Maintaining water conditions with a pH range of 6.5-7.4, a KH range of 6-10, and a temperature between 22.2-26.1°C is essential for their well-being (see table).
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful temperament, Bushy Nose Plecos are excellent additions to community aquariums. They are bottom-dwellers and exhibit interesting behavior when foraging for food. These fish are relatively easy to breed, with breeding typically occurring during the winter months.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Bushy Nose Plecostomus are not picky eaters. They primarily feed off the bottom of the aquarium, consuming leftover food and algae. In the absence of algae and food remnants, supplement their diet with high-quality flake foods, algae wafers, and other plant-based options. For the fry, mashed and peeled peas are recommended.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Bushy Nose Plecos can be induced by performing a 75% water change in late fall. The male guards the eggs deposited on driftwood, and the fry become waterborne after around 10 days. It is advisable to separate and raise the fry in a different aquarium for their well-being.
Habitat and Distribution
Bushy Nose Plecostomus are native to the rivers and tributaries of South America. They are commonly found in the Amazon Basin and Paraguay. These fish prefer well-oxygenated waters with hiding spots provided by rocks and driftwood.
