General Description

The Baryancistrus Sp. L142, also known as Big White Spot Pleco or L142, is an undescribed species belonging to the family Loricariidae within the order Siluriformes. Characterized by an enlarged membrane posterior to the last branched dorsal-fin ray, it is relatively peaceful as juveniles but males can become highly intolerant of conspecifics as they age.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank size of at least 240 litres is recommended. The setup should mimic a flowing river environment with varied rock and gravel substrate, large boulders, driftwood branches, and tough aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias spp. Bright lighting is essential to promote aufwuchs growth, a key part of their diet.

Behaviour

As they mature, male Baryancistrus Sp. L142 may exhibit aggressive behavior towards other fish perceived as territorial threats. They are best kept with medium-to-large sized characids or provided sufficient territorial space if part of a group in a large aquarium.

Feeding and Diet

Their diet primarily consists of algae like diatoms and filamentous genera, supplemented by invertebrates, high-quality sinking dried foods, bloodworms, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Home-made gelatine-bound recipes are also recommended for a varied and nutrient-rich diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction of Baryancistrus Sp. L142 has not been reported. Adult males can be distinguished from females by their broader, slightly flatter head profile and longer pectoral-fin spines.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is apparently found in the rio Tapajós in Pará state, Brazil, inhabiting shallow, fast-flowing, warm waters. They are intolerant of organic waste accumulation and require pristine water conditions with ample dissolved oxygen and water movement to thrive.
