General Description
The Thomasi Plecostomus, scientifically known as Chaetostoma thomasi, is a peaceful species belonging to the Loricariidae family. It showcases a heavily-armored appearance with a body color ranging from light brown to gold, accented by scales outlined in darker brown to gray hues. This omnivorous fish can grow up to 15.2 cm in length and is commonly referred to as the Thomasi (L-188a) Plecostomus.
Aquarium Setup
To create an ideal habitat for the Thomasi Plecostomus, it is recommended to set up a planted aquarium with robust, fast-growing plants that contribute to a healthy environment. Adequate aeration, water movement, rocks, and driftwood should be incorporated to mimic its natural habitat and provide essential hiding spots to alleviate stress. A minimum tank size of 200 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised (see table).
Behaviour
Typically displaying a peaceful temperament, the Thomasi Plecostomus thrives in community aquariums. However, limited information is available regarding its breeding habits, as it has not been successfully bred in captivity.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding the Thomasi Plecostomus is relatively simple as it is not a picky eater. This species primarily feeds off the aquarium floor, consuming leftover food and algae as its main sources of nutrition. In the absence of algae or food remnants, supplement its diet with high-quality flake food, sinking carnivore pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, and tubifex.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
There is scarce data available on the breeding habits of the Thomasi Plecostomus. It remains largely unexplored, and breeding in captivity has not been documented, making it a mysterious aspect of this species' lifecycle.
Habitat and Distribution
Originating from the rivers and tributaries of South America, the Thomasi Plecostomus thrives in freshwater environments with specific water conditions. It prefers water with a pH range of 6.5-7.4, a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, and moderate hardness, with a KH level of 6-10.
