General Description

The Farlowella Vittata, also known as the Twig Catfish, belongs to the family Loricariidae and is a species of fish found in South America. It is distinguished by its slender, stick-like appearance and adept camouflage abilities.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank setup mimicking its natural biotope, such as a dimly lit stream-type environment with sand substrate, rounded stones, rocks, driftwood branches, or a planted tank, is recommended. Water conditions should be well-oxygenated, with a slight current, and maintained at a temperature of 24-27°C, a pH of 6.0-7.0, and a hardness of 3-10°dH (see table).

Behaviour

The Farlowella Vittata is known for its peaceful nature but is unsuitable for community tanks due to its specialized requirements and retiring temperament. While males can exhibit territorial behavior, they rarely cause harm, making them suitable for tanks with multiple individuals or compatible tankmates like small characins, danios, and other Loricariids.

Feeding and Diet

As primarily vegetarian feeders, their diet should consist mostly of vegetable matter in both fresh and dried forms. They accept small live and frozen foods but should not rely on them heavily. They graze on various surfaces in the aquarium, consuming diatoms and common green algae but avoiding troublesome types.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Farlowella Vittata requires suitable conditions and a well-fed environment. The fish tend to spawn at night, with the male guarding the eggs until hatching. Rearing the fry is challenging due to their sensitivity to water chemistry and need for abundant soft vegetable matter. Males are easily distinguished by the broader rostrum and odontotes absent in females.

Habitat and Distribution

Inhabiting areas with submerged vegetation, dead leaves, and sticks along the banks of gentle streams and rivers, Farlowella Vittata is native to the Orinoco River basin in Colombia and Venezuela. They are sensitive to changes in water parameters and require stable conditions for longevity in captivity.
