General Description

The Hypancistrus Inspector, commonly known as L102 or Snowball Pleco, can be identified by its color pattern consisting of a brown to black base with large whitish to yellow spots. With 24 plates in the mid-ventral series, it is most similar to H. contradens, differing in the size of dorsal-fin and spots on the head and body. This species belongs to the Loricariidae family and is a peaceful fish suitable for community tanks.

Aquarium Setup

To simulate its natural habitat, the Snowball Pleco should be kept in an aquarium resembling a flowing stream with a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and boulders. Decorate with driftwood, terracotta pipes, and plant pots to provide hiding spots. Regular water changes, good oxygen levels, and minimal organic pollutants are crucial for their well-being. Maintain water temperature between 22-30°C, pH levels of 5.0-7.5, and hardness of 18-268ppm (see table).

Behaviour

This species is peaceful and can coexist in a well-chosen community tank. It's advised to avoid keeping it with other Hypancistrus species to prevent hybridization. The male Snowball Pleco is responsible for cave-spawning and caring for the brood. Males display more odontodes and a reddish tone on the body compared to females.

Feeding and Diet

Snowball Plecos are likely omnivorous, with a preference for aquatic invertebrates. In an aquarium, feed them a varied diet including sinking dried foods, frozen Daphnia, mosquito larvae, shrimp, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Homemade gelatin-bound foods containing a mix of natural ingredients can also be beneficial.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

This species has been successfully bred in captivity. Males exhibit increased odontodes and a reddish tone, with a more slender body compared to females. They engage in cave spawning, with males taking care of the offspring.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the upper Rio Negro basin in Brazil and parts of the Casiquiare drainage in Venezuela, the Snowball Pleco inhabits rocky rapids. The species' type locality is in the Amazonas state of Brazil, and it thrives in habitats with clean water and ample oxygen.
