General Description

The Panaqolus Sp., commonly known as L403, belongs to the Loricariidae family within the Siluriformes order. Growing up to 12.0 cm in length, this species is currently prohibited from export and is specifically found in the rio Anapu, a tributary of the lower Amazon basin in Pará state, Brazil. The etymology of its generic name, Panaqolus, is a diminutive form of the generic name Panaque.

Aquarium Setup

A minimum tank size of 160 litres is recommended for this species. Setting up the aquarium to mimic a flowing stream involves a substrate of variably-sized rocks, sand, fine gravel, water-worn boulders, driftwood branches, terracotta pipes, and plant pots. These components create a network of hiding spots and shaded areas, crucial for the wellbeing of the Panaqolus Sp., which primarily feeds on wood.

Behaviour

This species is xylophagous, meaning it feeds primarily on wood. As a result, it is essential to provide a selection of driftwood in its aquarium, supplemented with specialized dried products designed for wood-eating fishes. Avoid offering meaty foods as the Panaqolus Sp. cannot efficiently digest them.

Feeding and Diet

The Panaqolus Sp. exclusively feeds on wood and must have driftwood available in its aquarium for proper nutrition. Commercially prepared products for wood-eating fish can also be offered to supplement its diet, while meaty foods should be avoided due to the species’ digestive limitations.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction of the Panaqolus Sp. has been achieved in aquarium settings. Adult males of this species exhibit sexual dimorphism characterized by prominent odontodes on the rear portion of their bodies.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is native to the rio Anapu in Pará state, Brazil, within the lower Amazon basin. Flourishing in water conditions with a hardness of 36-179ppm, pH levels of 6.0-7.0, and temperatures ranging from 24-30°C, the Panaqolus Sp. thrives in riverine habitats rich in driftwood and rocky substrates.
