General Description
The Mango (L-47) Plecostomus, scientifically known as Parancistrus sp. Magnum, originates from the Amazon Basin in South America. This species is recognized by its distinctive lime green body color, complemented by vivid yellow stripes on the dorsal and caudal fins. With its peaceful temperament, this elusive fish makes a captivating addition to any community aquarium setup.
Aquarium Setup
To ensure the well-being of the Mango Plecostomus, a planted tank with high aeration and water circulation is recommended. Incorporating rocks and driftwood not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides hiding spots, reducing stress for the fish. Given their size, a minimum tank capacity of 70 gallons is advised to accommodate their needs effectively.
Behaviour
Known for its peaceful demeanor, the Mango Pleco is a calm and non-aggressive species that coexists well with other tank mates. These fish are primarily bottom feeders, scavenging for leftover food and algae to fulfill their nutritional requirements.
Feeding and Diet
The Mango Plecostomus is an omnivorous species that is not finicky when it comes to food. Primarily feeding off the aquarium's bottom, they rely on algae and leftover food for sustenance. In the absence of these, supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, sinking carnivore pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, and tubifex is recommended.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding the Mango Plecostomus in captivity has not been widely successful, although various methods are being explored within the aquaculture industry. As egg-laying fish, they tend to utilize plants and rocks as spawning sites. Dimorphism between genders in this species may become more apparent during the breeding phase, where notable differences in size and reproductive behavior could be observed.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Mango Plecos inhabit the freshwaters of the Amazon Basin in South America. They prefer regions with water conditions that have a pH range of 6.5-7.5, a temperature range between 22.2-24.4°C, and a moderate hardness level (KH of 8-12). Its striking appearance and adaptability to varied water conditions make it a prized species among aquarists seeking a visually appealing and low-maintenance addition to their tanks.
