General Description

The Big Spot Peckoltia, also known as L163, is a member of the Loricariidae family. This species, potentially related to the genus Hemiancistrus but currently undescribed scientifically, can grow up to 11.0cm in size. It is collected solely from the Rio Pará in the Brazilian Amazon and is recognizable by its distinctive spotted patterning.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal aquarium setup, a stream-type environment with gravel or sand substrate, rounded stones, rocks, water-worn wood, and a high flow rate is recommended. While live plants may struggle in such conditions, hardy varieties like Vallisneria, Anubias sp., java fern (Microsorum pteropus), or java moss (Vesicularia dubyana) can be introduced. Alternatively, clean and well-oxygenated water in a general tank setup is also suitable. Water conditions should ideally maintain a temperature of 23-26°C, a pH of 6.5-7.2, and a water hardness of 5-12°dH.

Behaviour

The Big Spot Peckoltia is a suitable addition to community tanks, especially when paired with peaceful species in a South American setup. It can coexist with characins, peaceful cichlids, and catfish such as Corydoras and other Loricariids. However, when keeping multiple individuals, it is crucial to provide each with its territorial refuge to mitigate potential conflicts.

Feeding and Diet

This omnivorous species benefits from a varied diet. Offer a mix of sinking dried foods, vegetable matter like blanched spinach or Spirulina, live/frozen foods such as bloodworms or Daphnia, and some individuals may also consume softer-leaved aquarium plant leaves.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction behaviors of the Big Spot Peckoltia are unreported in the aquarium hobby, while sexual dimorphism remains unknown.

Habitat and Distribution

Found exclusively in the Rio Pará in the Brazilian Amazon, the Big Spot Peckoltia thrives in this specific habitat, although detailed information about its natural habitat remains unspecified.
