General Description
The Spotted Sailfin Plecostomus (L-001), also known as Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus, is a peaceful freshwater fish belonging to the Loricariidae family, characterized by its chocolate-brown body adorned with irregularly patterned gold spots. This species, which can grow up to 30.5 cm, is native to the Tocantins River basin in Brazil, South America, and is favored for large community aquariums and koi ponds in warmer regions.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate the Spotted Sailfin Plecostomus adequately, a spacious, well-filtered aquarium of at least 70 gallons (28 litres) is recommended, considering its potential size. Aquascaping with plants, rocks, and driftwood mimics its natural habitat and provides the fish with security. Water conditions should be maintained with a temperature between 23.3-26.1°C, pH levels of 6.5-7.4, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 6-10.
Behaviour
Known for its peaceful temperament, the Spotted Sailfin Plecostomus is a herbivore that contributes to algae control in aquariums. It appreciates environments with ample hiding spaces and substrate for foraging, showing a preference for peaceful cohabitation with other fish species.
Feeding and Diet
In the absence of algae, the Spotted Sailfin Plecostomus should be provided with supplementary herbivore preparations, algae wafers, and fresh vegetables like romaine lettuce and zucchini. Its herbivorous nature makes it an effective algae eater, contributing to the maintenance of a balanced ecosystem within the aquarium.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In the wild, this species is known to be an egg layer; however, successful breeding in an aquarium setting has not been widely achieved. Efforts to replicate natural breeding behavior have proven challenging, and as such, most Spotted Sailfin Plecostomus available in the aquarium trade are bred in commercial facilities.
Habitat and Distribution
The Spotted Sailfin Plecostomus inhabits the freshwater rivers of the Tocantins River basin in Brazil, South America. Its natural habitat consists of slow-moving waters with rocky substrates and ample aquatic vegetation, where it feeds on algae and organic detritus as part of the ecosystem.
