General Description

Euchilichthys Guentheri, one of only four described species within the Euchilichthys genus (though more have been discovered), is a rare find within the aquarium hobby. Distinguished by its elliptical mouthparts and its larger adult size when compared to similar Chiloglanis species, this peaceful fish lacks the armored scuting found on the bodies of South American Loricariids. Endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo, it can reach a maximum size of approximately 19.0cm.

Aquarium Setup

To create an ideal environment for Euchilichthys Guentheri, an aquarium of at least 110 liters should be equipped with a fine gravel or sand substrate and various sizes of smooth rocks for shelter. It is essential to ensure strong water flow and high oxygen levels in the tank, for which the use of powerheads is recommended. While plants are not mandatory, encouraging algal growth can be beneficial. Additionally, this species thrives in water with a pH range of 6.4-7.4, hardness between 3-10°dH, and a temperature of 23-27°C (see table).

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful nature, Euchilichthys Guentheri can coexist harmoniously with other rheophilic species in the aquarium. It is compatible with Alestiid tetras, Nannocharax, fast water Synodontis like S. brichardi, cichlids such as Steatocranus, and certain South American Teleocichla species. While juveniles can be kept in groups, adults tend to become territorial with conspecifics as they mature.

Feeding and Diet

As an omnivorous species, Euchilichthys Guentheri readily accepts various small live and frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. It also enjoys consuming greenery in the form of cucumber slices, algae wafers, and other similar offerings.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information regarding the reproduction of Euchilichthys Guentheri in aquarium settings remains unrecorded, and details on sexual dimorphism are currently unknown.

Habitat and Distribution

Inhabiting fast-flowing areas of rivers, Euchilichthys Guentheri is primarily found in the river systems of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
