General Description
The Mustard Synodontis, also known as the Mustard Squeaker, is a peaceful fish that is small in size, making it suitable for community tanks. It belongs to the Mochokidae family and can reach a maximum size of 10.0cm. Endemic to the Majinga river system in Gabon, specifically the various biotopes within the river system.
Aquarium Setup
A recommended tank setup for Mustard Synodontis includes a minimum tank size of 70 litres with a densely planted environment, soft substrate, rocks, driftwood, and twisted roots creating hiding spots. Floating vegetation is advised to help diffuse light entering the tank. Water conditions should maintain a pH level of 6.5-7.5, hardness of 5-15°dH, and a temperature range of 24-28°C.
Behaviour
The Mustard Synodontis is a peaceful fish that can coexist successfully with a variety of species. It can be kept with other peaceful fish such as Alestiid tetras, Pelvicachromis sp., Mormyrids, Gouramis, and larger rasboras and barbs. When kept in smaller tanks, it may display territorial behavior, but in adequately sized aquariums, it can live harmoniously in groups or with other compatible species.
Feeding and Diet
Synodontis Albolineata is omnivorous and accepts a varied diet. It consumes frozen, live, and dried foods, showing no fussiness when it comes to feeding. Additionally, it enjoys vegetable matter like shelled peas and cucumber, which it will rasp at with its lower jaw's teeth.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction of the Mustard Synodontis has not been recorded in aquarium settings. Determining sexual dimorphism in this species is challenging due to its small size, making it difficult to accurately sex using the genital papillae method.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Mustard Synodontis inhabits various biotopes within the Majinga river system in Gabon. It prefers environments with suitable hiding spots and vegetation along the river.
