General Description

The Pyjama Synodontis, scientifically known as Synodontis Flavitaeniata, is a peaceful fish with an attractive orange striped pattern, distinguishing it as one of the most visually appealing Synodontis species. It is relatively sensitive to water quality changes, necessitating diligent aquarium maintenance. Originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically the Malebo Pool region of the River Congo, this species showcases variability in patterning and coloration, although it is easily recognizable.

Aquarium Setup

To house the Pyjama Synodontis successfully, an aquarium of at least 80 liters is recommended with a dimly lit environment. The tank should include soft substrate, rocks, driftwood, twisted roots for hiding spots, and floating vegetation to diffuse light. While additional plantings are advantageous, they are not mandatory. This species is known for not uprooting plants, making it suitable for a planted tank environment. The water conditions should ideally maintain a pH range of 6.5-8.0, a hardness of 3-25 degrees dH, and a temperature of 23-28 degrees Celsius.

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful nature, the Pyjama Synodontis can coexist with various species if they are more substantial than 2 inches in length, allowing for evasion of predation. Suitable tankmates include Alestiid tetras, Pelvicachromis sp., other peaceful cichlids, Mormyrids, Gouramis, and larger rasboras and barbs. It is advised not to keep them with boisterous species like Rift Lake cichlids. In communal settings, these Synodontis can live together if each fish has a designated refuge within the aquarium.

Feeding and Diet

Being omnivorous, Synodontis species, including the Pyjama Synodontis, are unselective eaters. They readily consume frozen, live, and dried foods. Additionally, they enjoy vegetable matter like shelled peas and cucumber, which they rasp at with their lower jaw teeth. This dietary flexibility makes feeding these fish relatively straightforward.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

In natural habitats, the breeding behavior of the Pyjama Synodontis, like other riverine Synodontis, involves scattering eggs in areas rich in micro-organisms during seasonal flooding. They do not exhibit parental care. Determining the sex of these fish can be challenging, as traditional methods like the genital papilla technique are ineffective due to their small size. However, adult females typically have a plumper appearance compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution

The Pyjama Synodontis is endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically found in the Malebo Pool area of the River Congo. It inhabits diverse biotopes within the Malebo Pool region, showcasing an adaptable nature towards varying water parameters.
